The Wood Family
Tarquin and Lippa Wood, along with their daughters Tamara and Pepali, and son Wilbur, live five minutes away from House in the Wild. Tarquin and Lippa are the founders of the Enonkishu Conservancy and oversee the management of House in the Wild.
Tarquin’s history in Kenya started when his grandfather came out in the 1940’s as a surgeon. Often called out to remote places to administer ‘modern’ medicine, he learnt how to fly. Then with two fellow surgeons, they started the ‘Flying Doctors’ – a mobile air ambulance service which has evolved to become a globally recognised medical services provider. As well as being a surgeon, he was also a pioneering farmer which continued down to Tarquin’s father and then eventually Tarquin himself. In 2012, the land surrounding the House in the Wild, once intensively farmed, was devoted to a pioneering rewilding project. Using grazing animals as the drivers of habitat creation, and with the restoration of dynamic, natural water courses, the project has seen extraordinary increases in wildlife and biodiversity.
Lippa came to Kenya with her family when she was young and Kenya has been her home since. Tarquin and Lippa married on the banks of the Mara River, in fact, on the very ground where they have now created this charming collection of properties. Together they have created a beautiful family home in the Conservancy and are inspiring the next generation of Woods to follow in their footsteps.
